Alpha Report: Environmental Disaster Unfolds in Akrotiri
Share on:

An Alpha report captured images of an environmental disaster unfolding in the Akrotiri peninsula. Excavators and heavy vehicles are committing an environmental crime, while the uncontrolled discharge of drainage water from developments in Fassouri, mixed with sewage through illegal pipes, poses the greatest threat.

Koula Michael, Executive Director of Terra Cypria, stated that many projects are not even connected to sewage pipes. Garbage floats in the drainage canal before being discharged into the sea, near Ladies Mile beach.

Tens of tons of untreated water end up in the sea, next to swimmers. Ms. Michael emphasized the health problem caused by this discharge.

The balance has been lost, citrus trees have been uprooted, and water is being diverted where it shouldn't be. Lake Makria has essentially disappeared behind reeds. Flamingos have already disappeared from Akrotiri, and according to Ms. Michael, birds have drastically decreased.

The issue was discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, following a complaint by Terra Cypria, which is requesting an investigation into the legality of the discharges. The Department of Environment claims it will take legal action against a construction company for illegal discharges.
