Illegal Landfills: A Huge Problem in Cyprus, says Commissioner

The Environment Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, highlighted the serious problem of illegal landfills in Cyprus. Despite efforts, the situation remains difficult to resolve, requiring coordinated action from citizens, local authorities, and the state.
Ms. Theodosiou stressed that waste must be properly managed, with an emphasis on avoidance, reduction, recycling, and reuse, to prevent potential fire outbreaks. She referred to the chronic nature of the problem, as well as the contamination of groundwater and the environment.
Citizens are constantly complaining about the situation, due to aesthetic nuisance, odor, and health risks. The Department of Environment has undertaken a campaign to remove materials from illegal landfills, but the situation remains difficult to resolve.
Ms. Theodosiou mentioned the case of Kouris Municipality, where a huge illegal dumping site of inert materials and waste was identified, causing odor. She also pointed out problems with the legal landfill of Vati, for which restoration has been planned.
The Environment Commissioner's Office organized the first Sustainability Festival of the Pedieos River, aiming to highlight problems and solutions related to waste disposal in the river. Despite cleaning efforts, the problem remains huge.
Ms. Theodosiou stressed the importance of cooperation with the Department of Environment, as well as raising awareness among citizens and local authorities. Unfortunately, the problem of garbage also extends to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean.
