African Dust Covers Acropolis and Athens

A significant African dust event enveloped Athens on Sunday, obscuring the Acropolis. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an orange warning, as dust concentrations are expected to be highest in southern Greece, particularly Crete, the Peloponnese, and the South Aegean.
The atmosphere was stifling in Athens and other regions, with mud rain contributing to a grey landscape. Meteorological conditions favor the transport of dust to eastern, and especially southern Greece, including Attica, the Cyclades, and Evia.
The National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr predicts the phenomenon will peak during the day, affecting most of the country. Strong south/southeasterly winds are expected in the seas, reaching 7-8 Beaufort, with gusts exceeding 100-110 km/h, especially in Crete and the Aegean.
