In the summer of 1974, amidst the coup and the Turkish invasion, Cypriot sports, especially football, continued to be a source of hope and perspective for the wounded society.

Despite the adverse conditions, such as the lack of sports facilities and equipment, athletes managed to organize and participate in championships. Many teams were hosted in various stadiums until they regained their own facilities.

The First Division Championship started on November 30, 1974, and ended on June 22, 1975. Anorthosis Famagusta won the Coca-Cola Cup.

The first post-war match of the Cyprus National Team was on November 15, 1975, against Greece at the Karaiskakis Stadium, with Greece winning 3-1.

Andreas Mouskallis, a former football player and coach, emphasized that football opened the tap of hope and gave people the opportunity to dream again.

Takis Antoniou, a veteran of APOEL, mentioned that sports took a back seat after the invasion, with priority given to survival and the restoration of society.

The Turkish invasion also affected other sports, such as basketball and track and field, with losses of athletes. Nevertheless, the athletes managed to excel and offer joy and encouragement to the Cypriot people.
