High Electricity Costs Prevent Elderly from Using Air Conditioning Amid Heatwave
Share on:

High temperatures and rising electricity costs pose serious risks to the elderly in Cyprus. Dozens of cases of heatstroke have been recorded, with the elderly being the most vulnerable group.

Increased Heatstroke Cases: Hospitals report an increase in cases of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn, mainly among the elderly.

Inspections in Care Facilities: The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare is intensifying inspections in nursing homes and facilities for people with disabilities to ensure compliance with heatwave protection measures.

Problems at Home: Many elderly people do not have air conditioning or cannot afford to use it, according to Dimos Antoniou, president of the Third Age Observatory.

Inadequate Measures: Mr. Antoniou stresses the need for a comprehensive heatwave management plan, similar to that for frost in winter, as well as policies to support vulnerable groups.

Proposals: Strengthening transportation for access to air-conditioned spaces and a long-term policy to address climatic conditions.
