Cyprus Healthcare: Challenges, Reforms, and Nurse Shortage
Share on:

New challenges are expected in the healthcare sector in Cyprus, despite significant upgrades and reforms already underway, such as the Patient Advocate institution. The change in leadership at the Ministry of Health is expected to affect plans, while 2026 is expected to focus on technological upgrades to the GHS and e-health.

Plans include the National Center for Clinical Documentation, the amendment of the General Healthcare System Law, the National Cancer Institute, and the establishment of the National Ambulance Agency. The National Center for Clinical Documentation, approved in November, aims to improve the quality of healthcare services.

One of the main outstanding issues is the shortage of nurses in the private and public sectors. Despite efforts to increase positions, the problem remains. Authorities are called upon to find solutions to address the shortage and the working conditions of nursing staff.

The Parliamentary Health Committee aims to promote bills, such as legislation for University Clinics and palliative care. The issue of radiodiagnostic centers is also pending.
