Housekeeper Arrested for Arson in Chios, Greece

A woman of Georgian origin has been arrested in Chios, Greece, on charges of arson. The arrest was made in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to reports, the woman works as a housekeeper and admitted her involvement in a fire that broke out in the northern part of the island, unrelated to the fires that affected the city.
The woman claimed that on June 23, while smoking, she extinguished her cigarette in a spot where the fire started shortly after. She further stated that she tried to put out the fire but was unsuccessful.
Initial estimates indicate that over 40,000 acres have been burned on the island, including forest and agricultural areas. Specifically, 28,500 acres are forest land, 3,600 acres are rocky areas, 400 acres are forests, and 8,400 acres are agricultural land.
