Cyprus Psychologists' Association Rejects OAY Proposal for GESY Inclusion
Share on:

The Cyprus Psychologists' Association (ΣΨΚ) has rejected the proposal by the Health Insurance Organisation (OAY) for the inclusion of counseling psychologists in the GESY system, with an overwhelming majority of 89%.

In a statement, the ΣΨΚ stated that it will continue consultations with the OAY, but its members will abstain from contracts until a satisfactory framework is achieved. They expressed disappointment with the proposed framework, arguing that it violates the right of beneficiaries to access the most qualified professionals and does not reflect the training of counseling psychologists.

The ΣΨΚ emphasizes that counseling psychology is a legally recognized specialty equal to clinical psychology and that there is no legal distinction between the two specialties. It proposes a common framework of diagnoses to ensure the free choice of professional by beneficiaries, something for which no agreement has been reached with the OAY.

Finally, the ΣΨΚ stresses the need to increase the budget for mental health.
