Legislative Framework Established for Allogeneic Transplantation Units in Cyprus

The Parliament approved the establishment of a legislative framework for the creation and operation of Stem Cell Application Units in the Republic of Cyprus, facilitating allogeneic transplants.
The bill was proposed by Efthymios Diplaros, Savia Orfanidou, and Charalambos Pazaros, on behalf of the Democratic Rally parliamentary group.
The benefits include addressing social, psychological, and economic impacts from patients traveling abroad, improving healthcare quality in Cyprus, and reducing state expenses.
The Ministry of Health submitted suggestions for amendments, such as setting the maximum number of transplants per Unit annually and establishing a Technical Committee for Unit establishment applications.
Additionally, the required years of experience for the Unit director and the nurse-to-patient ratio are increased, and accreditation from an international organization is required.
A scientific committee will be established to advise the Minister of Health on allogeneic transplants.
The Units will maintain a registry of procedures and cooperate with the National Archive of Volunteer Donors of Hematopoietic Stem Cells.
The facilities will be accessible to people with disabilities.
