Lottidou: Weaknesses in employment of people with disabilities in Cyprus

The Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights, Maria Stylianou Lottidou, identifies serious weaknesses in the employment of people with disabilities in Cyprus. According to a recent report, the integration of these individuals into the labor market remains problematic, despite supportive policies.

The report states that only 68 people with disabilities have been employed through the Incentive Plan since 2021, while the amount of the subsidy is deemed insufficient. In addition, there is a lack of data on the progress of people with disabilities after education and employment, and employers are not sufficiently informed about available schemes.

Ms. Lottidou proposes a revision of incentives for employers, expansion of the Supported Employment Scheme, establishment of the transition from school to work, strengthening the role of job coaches, information campaigns, and systematic data collection.

The Commissioner calls on the competent authorities to engage in dialogue to develop a comprehensive policy framework for the employment of people with disabilities.
