India: Camp Helps Women After Divorce Find a New Beginning

In India, a new initiative is helping women who have experienced divorce, widowhood, or abusive relationships to find a fresh start. 31-year-old Rafia Afi founded the country's first "divorce camp," offering a therapeutic retreat where women can share experiences and regain their confidence.
Afi, who herself experienced a divorce, started the Break Free Stories camps in Kerala, costing approximately 1,700 rupees (£15). Participants engage in activities such as hiking, dancing, and music sessions, as well as therapeutic discussions.
According to the National Family Health Survey, 32% of married women in India have reported domestic violence. Afi emphasizes that many women choose death over divorce due to social stigma. Lawyer Zaki J provides legal advice at the camps, helping women understand their rights.
Many participants report that the experience was transformative, helping them overcome trauma and find hope for a new beginning. Due to increasing demand, Afi plans to expand the camps to other cities in India.
