Saint Dionysios of Olympus was born shortly before 1500 AD in Sklataina, Karditsa (present-day Drakotrypa). His name was Dimitrios. At the age of 18, he became a monk in Meteora, taking the name Daniel.

Three years later, he went to Karyes of Mount Athos, where he became a priest and a great-schema monk, renamed Dionysios. Later he settled in the Karakalou hermitage where he lived hermetically for ten years. Around 1524 AD he settled in the Timios Prodromos monastery in Veria. He then left for Mount Olympus, where he practiced asceticism. In 1542 AD he founded the monastery of Agia Triada Sourvias in Pelion.
