Today, January 16th, according to the Greek Orthodox calendar, is the feast day of Saint Danax the Reader.

The Holy Martyr Danax came from the city of Avlona in Illyricum (modern-day Albania) and was a reader in the Church. When idolaters stormed the Church, Saint Danax rescued the sacred vessels and relics, keeping them in a safe place five miles outside the city.

The unbelievers arrested him and pressured him to sacrifice to the god Dionysus. The Saint refused, and the idolaters beheaded him, throwing his relics into the sea.
