Distress Call for Support for Individuals with Mental Health Issues

During the session of the Parliamentary Health Committee, relatives of individuals with mental health issues voiced their despair over the lack of state support. Cases were reported where individuals with potential mental health problems were held for days in detention or remained for hours in patrol cars until a hospitalization order was issued.

DISY MP, Savia Orfanidou, emphasized the need to support patients and their families, highlighting the lack of prevention measures. AKEL MP, Christos Christofias, referred to the national mental health strategy and the need to monitor its implementation.

DIKO MP, Chrysanthos Savvidis, welcomed the progress in implementing the second phase of Athalassa Hospital. DIPA MP, Michalis Yakoumi, stressed the need to revise the outdated legislation on psychiatric hospitalization.

All attendees agreed on the need for immediate action and support for individuals with mental health problems and their families.
