Crete: Alarming Increase in Migrant Flows Triggers Authorities' Response

A significant increase in migrant flows to Crete has been recorded, according to official data from the Hellenic Coast Guard. From January 1st to June 22nd, 2025, migrant arrivals increased by 258% compared to the same period in 2024.
Specifically, 133 rescue incidents were recorded involving 7,051 migrants, compared to 45 incidents and 1,968 arrivals in 2024. This year's arrivals have already exceeded the annual data for 2024, when 107 incidents with 4,935 migrants were recorded.
Nationwide, there is a slight decrease in overall flows. During the same period, 526 incidents with 16,533 migrants were identified, compared to 777 incidents and 17,248 arrivals in 2024, marking a 4% decrease. This shift of smugglers towards Crete has alarmed local authorities.
An emergency meeting was held in Heraklion, under the Heraklion Port Authority Commander Nikos Tsompanis, with the participation of Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Syrigonakis and the mayors of the region, to coordinate actions to manage the increased migratory pressure. In Rethymno, the 501 migrants temporarily housed at the Cesme stadium will be transferred to the Citrenosis building and will gradually depart for Reception and Identification Centers (RIC) in mainland Greece.
