AI Scams: Children Targeted as Parents Stay Silent

A new study reveals the growing threat of Artificial Intelligence (AI) scams targeting children online, as parents delay discussing related issues.
The Bitwarden poll, titled 'Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025,' shows that parents are concerned but not adequately discussing the risks with their children, leaving younger users vulnerable.
42% of parents with children aged 3-5 reported that their children had accidentally shared personal information online. Nearly 80% of children aged 3-12 have their own tablet or other connected device.
Bitwarden's research shows that 78% of parents are concerned that their child could fall victim to an AI-supported scam, such as cloned voice messages or fake conversations. Nevertheless, almost half have not spoken with their children about what such a scam looks like.
Tips for dealing with AI risks include:
- Open discussions with children.
- Education on responsible digital citizenship.
- Promoting online skepticism.
- Setting clear boundaries.
- Using privacy settings.
- Monitoring online activities.
- Reporting suspicious activity.
