Parliament Approves Referral on Livestock Farming Zones

The Plenary of the Parliament unanimously approved the referral of President Nikos Christodoulides regarding the law on livestock farming zones. The decision was accompanied by a modification of the original text.
The referral was made due to unconstitutionality, particularly in relation to the mandatory compensation and relocation in case of the abolition of a livestock farming zone. This provision was deemed to violate Article 80.2 of the Constitution and the principle of separation of powers, and may constitute state aid requiring approval from the European Commission.
Yiannakis Gavriil, Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, stated that the Committee decided to provide for a compensation and relocation plan only under specific criteria, which will be determined by the Council of Ministers.
