In his message for World Peace Day (September 1st), Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, argued that peace is linked to the acceptance of a 'two-state solution based on sovereign equality'.

Mr. Tatar referred to the role of Turkish guarantees for the 'security of Turkish Cypriots,' stressing the need for justice, equality, and freedom.

Referring to the Turkish invasion of 1974, he described it as the 'Cyprus peace operation,' claiming that it brought peace to the island. He reiterated that a solution is needed based on the existence of two states and the sovereign equality of Turkish Cypriots.

He also linked the security of the Turkish Cypriot community to the presence of Turkey, stressing that the security of the Turkish Cypriot 'people' cannot be entrusted to any mechanism other than the guarantee of Turkey.
