Paroutis: Problems in Education and the Need for Modernization

Sotiris Paroutis, commenting on Omega Channel, referred to the problems of public education in Cyprus. He pointed out that despite the fact that one billion euros are spent annually, with 80% going to salaries, the performance of Cypriot students is among the lowest in the EU.
Mr. Paroutis stressed the need to modernize the teacher evaluation system, saying it is imperative after 50 years. He also referred to the reaction of trade union organizations, arguing that they give the impression that they do not want modernization and use strike measures that harm students.
Comparing the situation with Cyprus Airways, Mr. Paroutis warned of the degradation of public schools and the increase in private education. He pointed out that in the private sector, underperforming teachers are fired, while in the public sector there is tenure.
