The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs discussed the amendment of the procedure for disciplinary actions against members of the Cyprus Police and the Cyprus Fire Service. The discussion concerns cases where members lose their status during disciplinary proceedings.

Nikos Loizidis, President of the Police Branch of the "Equality" Union, stated that two proposals were submitted: the first not to initiate disciplinary proceedings when there is a criminal case against a police officer, and the second not to stop the disciplinary proceedings until the death of the police officer.

Mr. Loizidis expressed satisfaction that MPs such as Panikos Leonidou, Aristos Damianou, Nikos Tornaritis, and Kostis Efstathiou stressed that a penalty cannot be imposed on an employee after retirement, as it will have no consequences. He pointed out that this is contrary to GRECO's recommendations for the speedy adjudication of disciplinary actions.

The Cyprus Police Association (SAK) reiterated that its members must comply with the laws, but adjudication procedures should not be delayed. SAK suggested the establishment of a special committee for the timely issuance of decisions before any member's retirement.
