Sener Elcil: Reactions to Land Sale in Occupied Akanthou

Trade unionist Sener Elcil, former president of the Turkish Cypriot teachers' union, is facing reactions regarding reports about the sale of land in occupied Akanthou to businessman Simon Aykut.
In a statement, Elcil does not deny the sale but rejects allegations of illegality, denouncing a smear campaign. He claims he signed off on his share of the family property, which he inherited and acquired "through hard work."
However, questions are raised about the existence of Turkish Cypriot land in Akanthou before 1974, as the town was purely Greek Cypriot with 1,294 residents. Elcil's family originates from Kalavasos and moved to Akanthou after 1974.
These data cast doubt on Elcil's claims, especially considering his previous criticisms of Turkish actions in Cyprus.
