Ayaz Trial Observatory: Unkept Promises

The Observatory for the trial of Kenan Ayaz has denounced the failure to keep promises regarding his case. In a statement released on Wednesday, they spoke of shifting responsibilities despite commitments from the competent authorities.

Kenan Ayaz remains in custody, and his residence permit has not been arranged, despite his status as a political refugee recognized by the Republic of Cyprus. The Observatory argues that his treatment in the Central Prisons negates the institutional framework.

The statement emphasizes that no Cypriot authority had evidence of a criminal offense by Kenan Ayaz. The Republic of Cyprus chose to apply the European framework, despite the fact that the offenses for which he was convicted in Germany do not constitute criminal offenses in Cyprus.

The continuation of his detention constitutes a political choice for which the Republic of Cyprus bears full responsibility. There is a pending case against him in Turkey, which makes any delay in his release a heavy political and moral responsibility.
