Ukraine Reinstates Anti-Corruption Authorities After Backlash

The Ukrainian parliament overwhelmingly approved a bill reinstating the independence of anti-corruption authorities, replacing a previous text that had sparked criticism.
A total of 331 deputies voted in favor of the new text presented by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko welcomed the result, assuring that the new law «eliminates the risk of interference in the work of anti-corruption organizations.»
The previous text had placed the national anti-corruption service, NABU, and the special anti-corruption prosecutor's office, SAP, under the control of the prosecutor general.
Faced with backlash, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a new bill that was approved by NABU and SAP.
The new law renews guarantees for the independence of anti-corruption bodies, introducing additional controls, such as lie detector tests.
