New bill for housing assistance after natural disasters

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is promoting changes to the framework for granting housing assistance after natural disasters. According to Deputy Minister Kostas Katsafados, this is a "substantial reform of responsibility towards citizens."
The bill establishes a new framework for financial aid, which includes:
- Housing assistance
- Initial assistance against housing assistance
- Temporary housing (rent/cohabitation subsidy)
- Lump-sum financial aid
- Granting of mobile homes
Key changes:
- Initial assistance will only be given in major disasters and for buildings unfit for use.
- Extraordinary inspections are established by the General Directorate for the Restoration of Natural Disaster Impacts (GDAEFK).
- An allowance for basic living needs is established for those affected.
- Aid for repairs to auxiliary spaces will be granted without a permit.
- Temporary housing units will be reused by municipalities.
- Financial assistance for home repairs and replacement of destroyed household equipment.
In addition, an electronic platform is being created for submitting applications and checking supporting documents, while the beneficiaries are being expanded, especially in cases of co-ownership.
Mr. Katsafados stressed that state support acquires a clear structure and social focus, addressing the needs of those affected with targeted tools.
