Peter Mandelson sought £547,000 in compensation after being removed from his position as the UK Ambassador to the United States in September 2025, following scrutiny of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Newly released documents reveal that Mandelson requested his full four-year salary be paid out. Ultimately, the government of Kir Starmer approved a £34,670 severance payment in addition to the £40,329 he was legally entitled to, totaling nearly £75,000.

Due diligence checks highlighted Mandelson's friendly relationship with Epstein, even after the latter's conviction. Jonathan Powell expressed reservations about Mandelson's appointment.

Darren Jones emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the release of the documents. Kir Starmer reportedly did not have accurate knowledge of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein when he decided on the appointment.

A letter describes a meeting chaired by Kir Starmer, where the decision was made to remove Mandelson, due to concerns about emails to Epstein.
