Lacroix: Escalation in Cyprus Without UNFICYP Vigilance
Share on:

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, warned that minor incidents in Cyprus could lead to escalation without the constant vigilance of UNFICYP.

Mr. Lacroix spoke at the UN Security Council in New York, emphasizing that UNFICYP has maintained a calm situation for over half a century. This stability is due to the mission's effectiveness and the prevention of escalation.

He also noted that UN peacekeeping missions contribute to building trust and promoting peace. The Security Council meeting was held at the suggestion of Pakistan, Denmark, and South Korea.
