The President of the Board of Directors of the Center for Studies and Research "Akti", Xenia Loizidou, sent an open letter to the Minister of Defense, Vassilis Palmas, expressing concerns regarding fire safety in military camps and ammunition storage areas.

The letter was also sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and was prompted by a reference from the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Victor Papadopoulos, on a radio program regarding the recent fires in the Limassol province.

Ms. Loizidou referred to a statement by Mr. Papadopoulos, where he mentioned the need to protect military camps with ammunition of the National Guard during the fires. Ms. Loizidou expressed concern about the adequacy of fire safety and firefighting systems in the camps, as well as the existence of evacuation and ammunition transfer plans.

Additionally, Ms. Loizidou questioned why the army did not assist in extinguishing the fires, instead of spending resources to protect the camps. She also requested a response from the Minister of Defense, without invoking secrecy for reasons of national security.
