Costa: Deployment of forces to Cyprus, an example of European autonomy
Share on:

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, described the deployment of forces from Greece, France, Italy, and Spain to Cyprus as a "strong example of European autonomy and unwavering solidarity." Speaking at a conference in Brussels, Mr. Costa emphasized developments in the Middle East and the need to uphold international law.

Mr. Costa stressed that Iran bears significant responsibility for the tension in the region, referring to attacks by Iran and Hezbollah against neighbors, including Cyprus. He called on all parties to exercise restraint and return to diplomacy.

Referring to the conflict in the Middle East, he warned that it creates geopolitical benefits for Russia, which is exploiting the situation at the expense of Ukraine. He recalled that the EU firmly supports Ukraine and has approved a €90 billion loan to cover the country's financing needs.

Finally, Mr. Costa underscored the need for multilateral cooperation and described the enlargement of the EU as "the best geostrategic investment for the future of Europe."
