Kefalogiannis: 1,000 Firefighter Hires in 2026

The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, announced that 1,000 new hires are planned for the Fire Department in 2026.

In an interview, Mr. Kefalogiannis emphasized that the country is facing extreme conditions due to fires, with over 10 million acres burned in Europe. He also mentioned that 18,000 women and men are serving in the Fire Department, noting an increase of approximately 30% compared to 2019.

The minister stressed the importance of prevention and citizen education, as 70%-75% of fires are due to human factors. In addition, he referred to the increase in funding for municipal fire protection and the "Antinero" and "Aegis" programs.
