Land Cleaning Deadline Starts, Strict Fines Imposed

The deadline for land cleaning starts on April 1st, with strict fines for violators. The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, emphasized that cleaning is a key preventive measure to avert fires.

Uncleaned plots are considered a significant risk factor for the outbreak and spread of fires, especially during the summer months. Mr. Kefalogiannis noted that fines remain high to enhance compliance.

The state financially supports municipalities in addressing the issue, with funding reaching 40 million euros last year. A new increase in funding is expected for 2026.

The ministry is promoting new fire prevention practices, such as 'prescribed burning' and 'controlled grazing.' 50 aerial means have been secured, while the technical firefighting fleet is being strengthened. The doctrine of immediate intervention continues with increased patrols and enhanced surveillance via drones.
