Great Sea Interconnector: Cyprus Faces Energy Isolation Risk

While Turkey proceeds with an agreement with the occupied territories for energy interconnection, the Republic of Cyprus risks remaining the only EU country without an energy connection, due to delays regarding the Great Sea Interconnector project (Cyprus-Crete-Greece electricity interconnection).

The project is considered strategically important for ending energy isolation, reducing electricity costs, ensuring system security, and utilizing RES. However, the Cypriot government does not show the necessary decisiveness, leaving the project to be delayed.

Turkey, on the other hand, has already signed an agreement with the illegal administration of the occupied territories, strengthening their dependence on Ankara and consolidating the occupation through critical infrastructure.

Business interests, fear of taking political responsibility, and the illusion that abstaining has no cost seem to be driving the government's reservations.

The DISY Energy Commissioner emphasizes the need for official participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the project, public political support, and informing citizens about the importance of energy interconnection.

Without decisive support, the project will be completed bypassing Cyprus, with the geopolitical competitor ready to fill the gap.
