Palmas Confirms Upgrade of Bases in Paphos and Mari

The Ministry of Defence is in the process of studies and contacts with the United States and the European Union to upgrade the “Andreas Papandreou” Air Base in Paphos and the “Evangelos Florakis” Naval Base in Mari, according to Defence Minister, Vasilis Palmas.
Mr. Palmas stated that the upgrades will contribute to Cyprus' enhanced role in the region, due to the crises in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as humanitarian and peacekeeping missions.
According to the Minister, American officials have visited the air base twice, while contacts have been made with Europeans for the project in Mari. The completion of the upgrade of the base in Mari is expected in 2-3 years, while the air base upgrade is estimated to be completed in 1.5 to 2 years.
The Minister emphasized that the bases are of Cypriot interests and Cypriot property and will not be assigned to foreigners. They will continue to serve allies in terms of training, information exchange, and the evacuation of citizens from crisis areas.
Cyprus' geographical position enhances its role as a 'country representing the Mediterranean in Europe,' making the modernization of the bases necessary.
