ELAM and Tensions in Pyla: Reactions and Statements

ELAM's leadership was restrained from advancing into the buffer zone, despite the tensions caused in Pyla. According to leaks, the president of ELAM expressed strong anger and initially considered enlisting in the National Guard.
ELAM denounced the "flagrant escalation" and the "attempt to impose faits accomplis" by Turkey in the buffer zone, stressing that they violate the status of the area under the responsibility of the United Nations. At the same time, it criticized DISAKEL and circles of Greek speakers.
MEP Mr. Geadis sent a complaint letter to the European Commission, requesting immediate intervention.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan stated that the military elements deployed on the island should not become a permanent presence and reiterated that Turkey is ready to defend Turkish Cypriots.
While tanks and soldiers were withdrawn, police officers, a flag and a tent remained in the area.
