EU leaders have adopted President Nikos Christodoulides' proposal for a structured process to activate Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union. The decision was made during the first day of the informal European Council.

It was agreed to prepare a draft for the structured process of activating the mutual support clause. The discussion took place during the dinner of European leaders in Ayia Napa.

EU leaders hailed Cyprus' initiative to invite regional leaders for dialogue on developments and enhanced cooperation in addressing the challenges and consequences of the crisis with Iran.

President Christodoulides did not make any statements after the dinner, referring to a press conference to be given together with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.

Nicosia's goal is to enhance the effectiveness of the European response in the event of the clause being activated by any member state.

The second day of the informal European Council will take place at the "Filoxenia" conference center in Nicosia.
