Dendias: Honoring the 'Eagle of Machairas'

The Minister of National Defence of Greece, Nikos Dendias, honored the memory of Grigoris Afxentiou, also known as the 'Eagle of Machairas', in a post.

Mr. Dendias stated that Greece keeps the memory of the struggles and sacrifices of Cypriots alive. In his statements at the Presidential Palace, he emphasized that the presence of Greek aircraft and frigates is a tribute to the memory of Afxentiou.

'We honor the memory of Grigoris Afxentiou, 69 years after his heroic sacrifice. The 'Eagle of Machairas', a selfless patriot, consciously and selflessly chose to walk the path of ultimate sacrifice and become a symbol of the struggle for the freedom of Cypriot Hellenism,' he wrote.
