Recognition of Thrace Bektashis: Reactions from Turkey

The Greek government has recognized the Bektashis-Alevis of Thrace as a religious legal entity, a move that has provoked reactions in Turkey.
The Bektashis, a small religious group of approximately 4,000 faithful, mainly reside in villages near Soufli. Their recognition provides legal protection and equality with the rest of the Muslim minority, exempting them from the authority of appointed muftis.
The Turkish newspaper «Aydinlik» accused Greece of trying to divide the Muslim minority, while Ozan Ahmetoglu, former president of the Turkish Union of Xanthi (TEX), claimed that Greece is implementing a divisive policy.
The Minister of Education, Sofia Zaharaki, stated that the recognition is a step towards protecting religious freedom.
The Bektashis-Alevis represent a more tolerant approach to Islam, with equality between men and women and fewer restrictions compared to Sunnis.
This move is expected to affect Greek-Turkish relations, as Turkey considers the unity of the Muslim minority in Thrace to be important.
