AKEL: Turkish Invasion Did Not 'Save' Any Cypriots

AKEL responds to Ünal Üstel's statements, emphasizing that the 1974 Turkish invasion bloodied Cyprus and did not 'save' anyone. In a statement, AKEL says that Ünal Üstel's claim that there would be no supporters of Makarios and AKEL without the invasion confirms the common logic of chauvinists on both sides.
AKEL emphasizes that the Turkish invasion did not save any Greek Cypriots, but brought destruction, mass murders, refugee status, rapes, and barbarities. It also points out that the occupation and colonization lead to the annihilation of Turkish Cypriots.
The party states that in 1974, coup plotters and invaders were accomplices, pawns of NATO, and that the Scylla of the Junta and EOKA B and the Charybdis of the Turkish Attila bloodied the Cypriot people and divided the homeland. AKEL's response is the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to end the occupation and division, for freedom and reunification of Cyprus.
