Today marks 65 years since the proclamation of Cyprus as an independent Republic on August 16, 1960, based on the Zurich-London agreements.

In an official ceremony at the House of Representatives, Cyprus became an independent Republic after 82 years of British rule. The last British Governor, Sir Hugh Foot, proclaimed the independence in the presence of President Archbishop Makarios III and Vice President Fazıl Küçük.

The Constitution came into effect on August 16, 1960, making Cyprus an independent and sovereign state. In September 1960, the Republic of Cyprus became a member of the United Nations.

In his address, President Makarios emphasized Cyprus' determination to work for the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

Initially, the independence day was August 16, but it was later moved to October 1 for practical reasons.
