Fines are coming for 350,000 drivers with vehicles that are uninsured, lack a Vehicle Inspection (MOT), or have unpaid road taxes, following electronic cross-checks in June. The Ministry of National Economy and Finance, in cooperation with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), is preparing to send notices with fines of up to €10,000.

At the end of September, cameras on highways will be activated to detect vehicles declared as out of service that are being driven illegally. The cameras will record vehicles without insurance, MOT, or in illegal circulation.

From the autumn, the vehicle registry will be purged. Of the 350,000 drivers, 150,000 did not have a valid MOT and 90,000 had not paid road taxes. The cross-checks are carried out using data from vehicle registries. The first notices are expected from the end of August to the beginning of September.

The fines are:

  • €250-€1,000 for uninsured vehicles
  • €400 for lack of MOT
  • Double amounts for unpaid road taxes
  • Up to €10,000 for vehicles declared out of service that are being driven

Owners have the right to appeal within 5 days. If they comply within 10 days, the fines are waived.

Vehicles without insurance, MOT, or road taxes for more than 7 years will be removed from the registry. A fee of €150 is required to restore them to service.
