The Municipality of Patmos has been fined €17,820 by the Region of South Aegean for serious violations of environmental legislation concerning the operation of the island's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

The decision, signed by the Deputy Regional Governor of Dodecanese, Christos Efstratiou, followed inspections and reports from various authorities, including the Patmos Port Authority and the Prosecutor's Office of Kos.

According to official documents, on August 18, 2025, it was found that the sewage treatment plant was out of operation without prior notification. This resulted in untreated sewage being discharged directly into the underwater pipeline, causing pollution in Hohlakas Bay.

The Patmos Police Department informed the Prosecutor's Office, which ordered a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the pollution. Despite notifications, the Municipality of Patmos did not rectify the problems in a timely manner.

The facility was found to be out of operation without notification to the Region and without a recovery schedule. The fine will be deposited in the Green Fund. The Municipality has the right to appeal the decision.
