The Water Development Department (WDD) assures that it is taking measures to ensure the sufficiency and quality of drinking water, responding to reports of water supply problems in mountainous communities.

In cooperation with local authorities and the Department of Geological Survey (DGS), drilling and utilization projects of new boreholes are being implemented to enhance the resilience of communities due to drought and climate change. The DGS has drilled 13 successful boreholes, while the WDD has completed 23 borehole utilization projects, with 11 more under study.

Additionally, the WDD is implementing a comprehensive program of projects, which includes:

  • Installation of four Mobile Desalination Units (Kissonerga, Moni, Garyllis, Limassol Port).
  • Tendering for additional temporary desalination units in the Limassol, Larnaca and Famagusta Districts.
  • Loss reduction projects in water supply networks through the "THALIA 2021-2027" Program.
  • Implementation of projects to enhance water supply in communities.
  • Promotion of new permanent desalination plants and subsidization of small private units.
  • Revision of water policy and information campaigns for water conservation.

Water transport by tankers is a temporary solution for emergency water needs. Prudent water use is crucial, given the lack of water awareness in Cyprus. In cooperation with the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus, the Stagonometro platform has been developed to understand and calculate water consumption.
