Cyprus: 'Alma' Movement Proposes Solutions for Water Crisis

The 'Alma' Movement proposes a comprehensive approach to address the water crisis in Cyprus, emphasizing that desalination alone is not sufficient. Dr. Odysseas Michaelides, head of the movement, points out that Cyprus ranks second worldwide in water stress, with the highest Water Exploitation Index (WEI+) in Europe.
'Alma' proposes institutional interventions, such as the reconstitution of an independent Unified Water Management Authority with strong responsibilities, as well as immediate management measures, such as a public awareness campaign, coupling desalination with RES, reducing network leaks, and immediate utilization of recycled water.
In addition, long-term solutions are proposed, such as restructuring agricultural water use, adopting smart technologies, modernizing infrastructure networks, sustainable development of new sources, and economic incentives for savings. The movement emphasizes that Cyprus' water problem is structural and requires integrated planning and social co-responsibility.
