A total of 157 people affected by the recent fires in Cyprus urgently need housing, according to statements by the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Charalambos Christofinas. Assurances have been given that permanent accommodation will be secured for as long as needed.

Mr. Christofinas stated that the Civil Defence services, in cooperation with other agencies, are working to find these accommodations. Currently, the 157 people, including approximately 30 elderly individuals, are being housed in temporary shelters.

Emphasis is being placed on meeting needs such as transporting cancer patients for treatment and transporting children to schools. Additional accommodations have been found, including government residences in Troodos.

The President of the Union of Communities of Limassol, Lefteris Periklis, stressed the need to implement the announced support measures and to immediately address any bureaucratic obstacles.

In addition, a program is underway to clean up the communities and provide specialized support from the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the Mental Health Services.
