The Pancyprian Veterinary Association has expressed its opposition to the Health Insurance Organisation's (HIO) decision to ban the supply of cancer drugs for animals, citing concerns about shortages.

In a statement, the Association emphasized that the ban was implemented immediately, leaving animals diagnosed with cancer without access to necessary treatment. The Association maintains that veterinarians have the right to prescribe human medicines when veterinary equivalents are unavailable, according to Article 112 of European Regulation (EU) 6/2019.

The Veterinary Association clarified that it is not seeking to deprive human cancer patients of access to medication, but is requesting proper planning to ensure sufficient quantities to cover the needs of animals as well.

The Association called on the HIO, the Ministry of Health, and Pharmaceutical Services to reconsider their decision and ensure continued access to these drugs for animals.
