Veterinary Services assure that there is no risk to humans from consuming beef in Cyprus. The country has been classified by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) in the category of 'Negligible Risk' for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).

The announcement was issued following a report in a Turkish Cypriot newspaper regarding the death of a Turkish Cypriot diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Veterinary Services clarify that BSE has never appeared in Cyprus.

Cyprus remains free from this particular disease, according to the control and surveillance programs implemented under European Veterinary Legislation. Beef consumption in the country is absolutely safe, as emphasized.
