Veterinary Services: Protocols Activated Immediately for Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Veterinary Services announced the activation of the Emergency Plan for foot-and-mouth disease immediately after the first case was identified, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2020/687.
The relevant Disease Control Centers have been activated, and epidemiological investigation, sampling, and tracing procedures are being implemented. Restriction and biosecurity measures have been imposed in the affected areas.
Farmers have been informed about biosecurity measures, and an official notification has been published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus (No. 5999, February 26, 2026), which includes prohibitions on the movement of animals, feed, grazing, and equipment.
Exceptions are only permitted with prior authorization for the movement of animals to slaughterhouses, the movement of feed and medicines through approved suppliers, and the transport of water.
The measures vary by zone, with stricter measures in infected areas and protection zones (Form SEA 8) and an emphasis on surveillance in surveillance zones (Form SEA 16).
The importance of adhering to biosecurity measures, such as access control, disinfection, the use of personal protective equipment, and visitor logging, is emphasized.
The Veterinary Services assure that their actions are coordinated with the EU and based on a comprehensive plan.
