Vouni Community Leader: "We Were Burning and the Fire Department Had No Water"

The community leader of Vouni, Matthaios Protopapas, attributed the village's destruction to a lack of organization and planning. In statements to the Cyprus News Agency (CYPE), he mentioned that fire trucks could not be supplied with water from a borehole due to a power outage.
Mr. Protopapas emphasized that the borehole, located outside the burned-down chapel of Saint John the Russian, had previously served the fire services. He pointed out the lack of a generator for water extraction and the inability of large vehicles to pass through the narrow streets.
He also referred to the cameras that recorded the fire and the delayed arrival of aerial firefighting resources. He announced that 35 houses were completely destroyed and 34 were damaged, while thanking those who helped the community, including fans of various teams.
Mr. Protopapas expressed the community's determination to rise from the ashes.
