Equality: Misleading reports of 'baby snatching'

The Sectoral Council of Social Services Officers of the Pancyprian Equality Union expressed concern about "misleading reports" regarding an alleged 'baby snatching' by officials of the Social Welfare Services.

According to the announcement, presenting such cases with terms like 'snatching' is inaccurate and offensive. Removing a minor from parental care requires a court decision, according to the Children Law (Cap. 352), based on the best interests of the child.

Equality considers that the report misinforms society, does not include the opinion of the Services, is based on unilateral complaints, violates journalistic ethics and exposes personal data. In addition, it stigmatizes institutions and officials and cultivates a climate of distrust.

Equality calls for the immediate withdrawal of the article and calls on journalists to return with all the necessary information and the official positions of those involved. It also proposes the issuance of official denials and the organization of a press conference to inform society.
