Yorkatzis: Stormwater Fee Necessary for Nicosia Sewerage Board Account

The President of the Nicosia District Self-Government Organisation (EOA), Konstantinos Yorkatzis, stated that the stormwater fee imposed for the first time in Nicosia on the accounts issued by the Nicosia Sewerage Board (SAL) is necessary. He mentioned that the fee concerns the cleaning of stormwater drains, some of which have never been cleaned.

Mr. Yorkatzis explained that for a property valued at €200,000, the annual fee is only €4. This fee, he said, is intended for the maintenance and cleaning of stormwater drains, a neglect that poses risks to infrastructure and citizen safety.

Unlike other provinces where the fee has been applied for years, Nicosia had not implemented it until now due to the lack of a relevant decree. Mr. Yorkatzis added that he made efforts to reach a consensus among the Municipalities of greater Nicosia so that SAL could officially assume this responsibility, but these efforts were unsuccessful.

Now, based on legislation, it was deemed necessary to implement this fee to ensure the maintenance of infrastructure.
