Share on:

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has ordered an internal investigation (EDE) into a pediatrician in Zakynthos following complaints that the doctor was not present during an on-call shift while an infant with meningitis required immediate care.

Mr. Georgiadis expressed his regret and apologized to the infant's parents for the "unacceptable behavior." The pediatrician responded that she was on sick leave and provided instructions by phone.

The infant is being treated in the ICU at the Rio hospital. According to the director of the Pediatric ICU, Andreas Iliadis, the infant's condition is stable, and the MRI was clear.

The infant's parents have filed a lawsuit. Private doctors who examined the images sent by the parents stated that it was an emergency.

The case has sparked strong reactions and questions about the adequacy of the healthcare system in Zakynthos.
